Electric water heaters heat water with two electic heating elements. A thermostat monitors water temperature. If the temperature drops below a certain point, a circuits in the elements are completed, generating heat. As hot water is released from the top of the tank, cold water goes in and is heated. Available in 40, 50 and 80 gallon sizes.
